Liquid Penetrant inspection is basically using a colored dye solution to locate surface breaking flaws in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The purpose of liquid penetrant inspection is to detect a variety of surface indications or flaws that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Therefore, you have options.

  1. You may use water washable techniques.
  2. Or, you will use a solvent removable technique.
  3. You also have an option of adding emulsifiers to the process. This helps to find very small or shallow indications.

Those indications might include pin holes, lack of fusion, cracks, etc. However, there are other types of indications. Some indications are specific to certain industries or processes. Therefore, special training is required for the inspector.

Liquid Penetrant inspection is important to the quality and safety of materials and structures. Therefore, it is one of the most widely used methods for detecting and examining surface cracks. Indications missed during inspection could cause parts to fail. As a result, material failure could result in collapse, explosion, bodily injury or death.

Most Common Uses for Liquid Penetrant Inspection

This inspection method is widely used for Flaw Finding, Flaw Identification, and Flaw Evaluation. So, let’s take a look at the role of the inspector for each.

Flaw Finding is basically what is says. You are primarily looking for very small flaws that cannot be found with the naked eye.  So, in many industries, these are critical to find. For example, small areas of cracking or lack of fusion in welds. These can cause material failure or explosion of materials under pressure.

Therefore, accurate flaw finding skills are important in manufacturing and design. But, these skills are also important in properly evaluating flaws. Codes and standards are used as guidelines for accepting and rejecting parts. The inspector must be able to correctly apply the codes to evaluating the indications found.

Flaw Identification and Evaluation skills are applied to a variety of materials. Therefore, a liquid penetrant inspector must have training to properly identify indications. He or she must be able to evaluate indications according to the requirements of appropriate codes and standards. And, as we mentioned, be able to accurately measure and document the indications as well.

So, skills needed for liquid penetrant evaluation are similar to those needed for visual inspection.

A properly trained liquid penetrant inspector will have training on interpreting Codes and Standards used in industry. As a result, he/she will be better prepared for a variety of inspection situations.

Basic PT Techniques

Our Liquid Penetrant Inspection Course covers both water-based techniques and solvent-based techniques. We also review emulsifiers.

Water-based Inspection

The inspector uses a water-based dye to inspect the parts. This makes it easy to rinse the excess penetrant from the surface. Therefore, this technique is a bit faster than solvent-based techniques.

Solvent-based Inspection

In this case, the liquid penetrant inspector uses a solvent-based dye solution. He or she must then wipe the surface with solvent to remove the excess penetrant. Therefore, it takes a little longer to perform the task. As a result, the inspector has the best chance at finding smaller surface indications. Solvent-based techniques are slightly more sensitive than water-based techniques.

Liquid Penetrant Inspection Certification RequirementsNDT Certification

Our Liquid Penetrant Inspection Course meets the requirements of ASNT SNT-TC-1a, NAS-410 and more.

Currently, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) certification requirements are as follows:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 12 Hours of Formal Training in PT Method – Classroom, Online, or Hybrid Learning
  • Three Tests – General, Specific, and Practical

*General Test – This is a closed book general knowledge test related to the method being studied.

*Specific Test – This test will test your ability to read, interpret and apply work procedures.

*Practical Test – This is a Hands-On test, which will prove your ability to apply what you have learned.

All tests require a minimum score of 70% to pass the test. But, the Composite Score (average of the three) must be a minimum 80%

  • On-the-Job Training or Experience – Documented by company
  • 70 hours OJT for Level I
  • ASNT requires an Additional 140 hours OJT to obtain Level II certification. So, a total of 210 hours of OJT Required
  • Annual Vision Acuity and color blindness test

Liquid Penetrant Inspection Training

Liquid Penetrant Inspection requires:

  • Basic Math Skills
  • Knowledge of correct measuring techniques
  • Lighting Techniques
  • Flaw Identification
  • Code Interpretation, and  more
